As a survey of literature from the Anglo - Saxon Age through the Eighteenth Century, this course will introduce students to various forms of literary expression throughout British history, including Old English epic poetry, Arthurian romance, Elizabethan drama, Neoclassical verse, &, of course, early incarnations of the novel. Students can expect to read, discuss, & write about a wide range of influential literary figures, notably Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jonson, Milton, Behn, Pope, & Swift. While this course will consider issues of aesthetic & literary value, students will also be encouraged to examine these works within their relevant cultural, historical, and philosophical contexts.
